Other Work

I've managed to write a couple of articles for other websites, and I have a YouTube channel and a Fan Fiction page. Enjoy!

Accidentally Building a Complicit Universe: A Game of You and Infinity War
This is my response to Avengers: Infinity War, and a particular plot point that I felt didn't get enough attention. I related it to the new Sandman series.

The Endless Hell of Discovering You Were Found Guilty of Tax Fraud in Absentia
This Tax Day story beats yours
I'm not entirely comfortable with that subheading, because I'm sure there's someone with a worse story, but this is my chronicle for a very difficult time in my life.

Below is how this page used to look; unfortunately, all the links are dead. I can't bring myself to delete all of this, though. Hopefully, the links will become active again someday.

In April 2016, after answering an open call for bloggers, I started writing for Geeks OUT, an organization I have long admired (their booth is one of the few necessary stops for me at every C2E2). The day I got the email that told me I had been accepted, in part because of this blog, was one of the happiest of my life. It was also mildly terrifying, because it meant I would have to increase my output and I already feel like a man with limited ideas. Thankfully, I have been able to keep up with their editorial standards (more or less). Someone I had the pleasure of meeting at Flame Con 2 paid me the compliment that my focus and style were "difficult to pin down" (I took that as a compliment, anyway) to which I replied that I was the go-to guy for obituaries. I'll admit that my focus isn't as niche as most pop culture writers (I've never been much of a "Star Wars or Star Trek" kind of nerd), but I hope it has appeal to someone. For that reason alone, I continue to write. I would like to present links to the work I do for them here. I've separated them into four categories; each one has the stories listed in chronological order, with the exception of the Legion recaps. I put those in reverse order, in case anyone wants to read the oldest first.

I joke that I write the obituaries, but I don't take those assignments lightly. I never forget that I'm writing about a person, and a person who's been incredibly successful and made an impact on a lot of people, too.

Personal Favorites

From Stonewall to Strange
Why the gay community should care about Hollywood whitewashing more than anyone.
I'd been developing the idea for this piece for a while, and finally managed to get my thoughts in a coherent order shortly after the release of the titular Marvel tentpole. I still haven't seen it and have no plans to do so.

A Conversation with Activist and Author P. Kristen Enos
Acclaimed writer talks about her new Kickstarter, the art of collaboration, and Flame Con
I learned of the opportunity to talk with Ms. Enos because of a press packet, and I was so grateful for it! This is actually my first interview to take place in a format other than email, and I was easily intimidated because I'm not very good at it. Fortunately, Ms. Enos was very kind and accommodating. It ultimately took the form that it did because I failed to record it and had nothing to transcribe. The Kickstarter campaign may be over, but the book is available and I highly recommend it!

Kickstarter We're Into: Flutter, Volume 3
The Celebrated LGBT indie comes to its thrilling conclusion!
It's no secret to readers of this blog that I'm a fan of Jennie Wood and her work. I almost tripped over myself to add this to the "[Crowdfund Campaign] We're Into" feature that Geeks OUT has from time to time once it got going. Thankfully, the campaign was successful, which means the complete Flutter will be reviewed by me on here at some point in the near future. I wish I'd come up with a better subtitle to this story, but sometimes deadlines demand compromises.

Unsung Gay Superhero: Ultraverse's Spectral
Nobody remembers the guy who came out second.
This is one of my favorite pieces ever. While all of my friends were debating DC vs. Marvel, I grew up reading Ultraverse comics. Their diversity was unprecedented at the time, if a bit hamfisted because comics in the 90s, and Marvel eventually ran them into the ground. But they'll always have a place in my heart. Bring back the Ultraverse, Marvel!

I Came to Buffy 20 Years Late (and That's OK)
Sometimes it takes a while to understand and appreciate a cultural landmark.
I had been working on this for a while, and was glad to publish it to mark the twentieth anniversary of the show. This is as much of a personal essay as a work of cultural criticism, and I was happy with the result.

Obituaries

John Hurt—Kane, Ollivander, Philanthropist
Legendary actor succumbs to pancreatic cancer.
I've always been a huge fan of John Hurt; he was one of those actors who always made even the most mediocre material better. In researching this article, I discovered the deep empathy and humanity of him that made such talent possible.

Renowned Artist Steve Dillon Passes Away
"Preacher" Co-creator Dies at 54
I wasn't sure if I should write this, to be honest, because I was never a huge fan of Preacher, but Steve Dillon deserved to be remembered, same as everyone, and there was no denying his talent. That talent is sadly gone now, but what it produced will always be with us.

Legion Recaps
The thing I'm most proud of with these is that I write them at a fever-dream pace close to midnight after viewing each episode only once. I consider it a slight miracle that any of them are even coherent.

Legion Recap S01E01
Marvel's latest television series is unlike any other—in the best possible way!
I was really looking forward to this show, and it didn't disappoint. I can't wait to see how it develops, along with my writing, since this is the first time I've ever provided weekly recaps for a show...

Legion Recap S01E02
The show trades exterior for interior infinity in a stellar second episode.

Legion Recap S01E03
The third episode raises the stakes and deepens the history.

Legion Recap S01E04
The season's first half ends with as many questions as answers.

Legion Recap S01E05
The series ramps up the action and tension in its own distinct way.

Legion Recap S01E06
The show takes a left turn before its final stretch.

Legion Recap S01E07
The penultimate episode tells us nothing we don't already know, but delivers a good cliffhanger.

Legion Recap S01E08
The first season of the groundbreaking series...Ends.
I was a bit disappointed in how the show resolved, but I would still recommend it.

Collaborations

Defending the Indefensible?
A roundtable discussion about the CBLDF's support of Simon & Schuster's publishing deal with Milo Yiannopoulos.
I'm very happy with what I contributed here, though it was tough getting this one off the ground. Eventually, we only had three people, myself included, and we all more or less agreed with each other. Not the best circumstances for a discussion, I'll admit, but it did help me figure out why I held the opinion I did and how best to articulate it.

Teenagers Aren't Just for Getting Off Lawns Anymore!
The Value of Teen Representation in Superhero Stories
This also had a panel of people who more or less agreed with each other, but it was a great deal of fun in the process.
